The Foundation for Our Educational Vision
”If we are to produce a society of educated people, fitted to preserve their intellectual freedom amid the complex pressures of our modern society, we must turn back the wheel of progress some four or five hundred years, to the point at which education began to lose sight of its true object… Modern education concentrates on 'teaching subjects,' leaving the method of thinking, arguing, and expressing one’s conclusions to be picked up by the scholar as he goes along. [Classical] medieval education concentrated first on forging and learning to handle the tools of learning.
-Dorothy Sayers, Author, From her lecture at Oxford University, 1947
Our History
Several families inspired by a vision for classical Christian education began discussing the school’s establishment.
An Evergreen member tutored two home-schooled children.
Four families formed a homeschooling cooperative and started developing a curriculum. In September of 2001 St. Stephen’s started the year in a separate facility with 13 students in grades K-6.
St. Stephen’s moved to Beaverton Nazarene Church with 53 students and a formal principal, Mrs. Raelene Meeker.
Construction of the school’s facility began on land adjacent to Evergreen Presbyterian Church. In April of 2007 the church approved a building proposal, leading to a groundbreaking ceremony in September 2007.
St. Stephen’s obtained registration as an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, and more than 80 students were enrolled. In January of 2008, the new facility became operational, formally opened by Evergreen Pastor Nathan Lewis and Beaverton Mayor Rob Drake. By April of 2008 Mr. John Breckenridge was appointed as the new principal.
St. Stephen’s became the 22nd school accredited through the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS).
St. Stephen’s began leasing classroom space for the Upper School from Lake Bible Church in Lake Oswego.
Mr. Travis Koch became the new Headmaster.
St. Stephen’s became one of the first six schools accredited by the Society for Classical Learning, moved the Upper School north to Sunset Church, and launched Covenant Classical Christian Academy, a collaborative schooling option built on the St. Stephen’s curriculum
